Curriculum

Get curriculum information by year group at our school.

At St. Michael’s school we want our children to follow a broad and exciting curriculum that has knowledge, skills and vocabulary at the heart of their learning. We ensure that they have ample opportunities to embed fundamental skills and express knowledge in a variety of interesting ways. We ensure that our curriculum allows them to delve deeper into their learning, building on skills and knowledge progressively each year. We make our learning interactive and practical wherever possible. For example, the children love carrying out science experiments, using the glockenspiels, cooking delicious food and using the Chromebooks to code and program. We make the most of our rural location and love to take the children outside to enhance their learning in lessons such as science and geography where they may search for plants or minibeast and engage in some map reading.

Our teachers are skilled at delivering well-paced, high quality lessons with excellent subject knowledge at the very heart. We have a consistent, research-based approach to delivering lessons across the school that ensures the children engage in their lessons in a meaningful way and crucially, remember what they have been taught over time. Learning tasks are adapted where necessary to allow all children, regardless of ability, to be successful and make progress. Reading is a key priority in our school; support and interventions are in place to ensure every pupil leaves us a fluent and avid reader.

Reading

We have fully embedded the Read Write Inc scheme of work for phonics across Early Years and Key Stage 1 and from Year 2 upwards the Steps to Read programme for developing comprehension skills and vocabulary acquisition. Phonics is taught to all children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 for at least 30 minutes per day.

We prioritise reading and continually assess children to identify where extra support and interventions are needed. We aim to ensure each and every pupil is a fluent reader by the time they leave St. Michael’s School.

We strive to engage more KS2 pupils in reading for pleasure. We have recently acquired a lot of new books for the library (as requested by the pupils) and ensure that pupils have access to this weekly.
